Saurer have been producing military trucks for the Swiss military since the 1970’s.
The Saurer 6DM has a 4×4 configuration. It was developed alongside the 10DM model with 6×6 configuration. Both models shared a common cab, engine, transmission, and many other components. In the early 1980s the Adolf Saurer company, which produced these trucks, was acquired by Daimler-Benz. This truck was never originally exported outside Switzerland but now both models are available to buy today at Pilatus Engineering.
This military truck is fitted by a rather powerful Saurer D4KT 12 L turbocharged diesel engine, developing 250 hp. The chassis is semi-flexible with independent suspension. Interestingly the front and rear axles are interchangeable.
A baseline version of the Saurer 6DM is a troop/cargo carrier but is now used in mining a forestry in Zambia. Number in the designation denotes maximum payload capacity of 6 000 kg.
Saurer 10DM is a larger version with 6×6 configuration. It was also developed in the late 1970s alongside the 6DM. The first prototype was completed in 1978. Both models share a common cab and many other components. It was adopted by the Swiss Army in the early 1980s, alongside the 6DM. A total of 400 of these trucks were produced.
Puch is a manufacturing company located in Graz, Austria. The company was founded in 1899 by the industrialist Johann Puch and produced automobiles, bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. It was a subsidiary of the large Steyr-Daimler-Puch conglomerate.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, sometimes called G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen, “terrain vehicle”), is a mid-size four-wheel drive SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Austria and sold by Mercedes-Benz. In certain markets, it has been sold under the Puch name as Puch G.
The G is famous for having three locking differentials (front, center, and rear), and with the right tires these ex-military trucks would be nearly unstoppable.
